Holding on and Letting Go
A webinar with Michelle Alkon for parents of individuals with Asperger Syndrome or related conditions Parents of teens and young adults with Asperger Syndrome often concentrate on making sure their children have the skills they need to move from school to college or career with great success and independence. This webinar will offer a perspective on supporting your child into that transition, when the relationships and roles between parents and children has to transition as well. A major focus will be on increasing self-understanding, self-advocacy, and the ability to work with others at school, on the job, and in the community. Michelle Alkon is a coordinator of adult services at AANE. She works with adults with AS and related conditions and their families on a variety of issues including understanding how their disability might impact their lives as they approach challenges with relationships, work, and independent living. She is a frequent speaker at conferences for parents and professionals focusing on AS in adults and has contributed to publications including the Autism Consortium's guide, Transitioning Teens with Autisms Spectrum Disorders and the anthology, Voices of Autism. Michelle has a master's degree in public health from Harvard University, where she learned a lot.
