1/10/15, AANE annual benefits conference
1/10/2015
Don't miss this conference!
Phone-in registration open until Friday, January 9. Planning for the future of your child or young adult with Asperger's can be overwhelming. Ideally, we have all created long-term plans in anticipation of future needs. In reality, that's not so simple. The good news is that the prospects for the future are suddenly brighter! New laws passed in 2014 will make it easier, for example, to set aside tax-free funds to provide for the long-term care of a loved a one. Legislation was also passed that expands DDS eligibility to cover many in our community who previously would have been excluded. At AANE's annual Benefits Conference our experts will tell you about new and existing public and private supports that are available and how to obtain them. We'll discuss everything from legal planning to housing options. We'll even host a forms clinic to help you complete the applications for public programs. Even if you've attended our Benefits Conference in the past, you should plan to attend this year to learn about the exciting new opportunities that are now available. And who better to tell you about them than your friends at AANE? WhereLasell College - Winslow Academic Center 1844 Commonwealth Avenue Newton, MA 02466 Click here to learn more and register! Practical and Effective Strategies for Students with Anxiety Jessica Minahan, M.Ed, BCBA author of The Behavior Code 7-9PM, Paul Pratt Library, 35 Ripley Rd., Cohasset According to The Anxiety Disorders Association of America one in eight children suffer from anxiety disorders. National Institute of Health (NIH) reports one in four children between 13-18 have experienced anxiety or depression. Without intervention, these children are at risk for poor performance, diminished learning, and social/behavior problems in school. Understanding the role anxiety plays in a student’s behavior is crucial and using preventive strategies are key to successful intervention. Effective behavior plans for these students must avoid the reward and punishment-based consequences from traditional behavior plans and focus instead on the use of preventive strategies and on explicitly teaching coping skills, self-monitoring, and alternative responses. Easy to implement preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for reducing anxiety, increasing self- regulation, executive functioning, and self-monitoring will be discussed. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that one in four thirteen-eighteen year olds has had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Core Competency: Understanding the Growth & Development of Children & Youth Refreshments served. All Cohasset SEPAC speakers are free to the public.
